Plastics have become a major interest to me over the past years. It all started with walks in the neighborhood where I saw the amounts of plastic litter laying around. The next step was when I worked at Umincorp, a plastic recycling company. There I learned that closing the plastic loop is a major challenge due to the many plastic types and applications of plastic material. As humanity we are recycling more every day, but still the majority of our plastics isn’t recycled and is incinerated or ends up on landfills and in the environment. Now my focus has shifted back to where it started: plastics in the environment. My research will focus on microplastics in rivers, and specifically the impact of biofouling on the microplastic transport.
