I am interested in the effects of human activities on the marine environment, specifically the effects of sound, offshore windfarms, and aquaculture. Currently, the North Sea is being exploited extensively by humans, for example for the energy transition, but I see an opportunity to create a better balance – and perhaps even a synergy – between human activities and ecology. I aim to generate knowledge that informs management decisions for the marine environment that safeguard nature’s wellbeing.

Biography

I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Animal husbandry at Hogeschool Inholland in Delft and a Master’s degree in Biology at Leiden University. After that, I held two positions as a research assistant, to study auditory perception of songbirds and the impact of sound on fish. For my PhD project, I focused on the impact of anthropogenic sound on marine animals from different trophic levels and the interactions among them. I stayed in Leiden as a postdoctoral researcher, focussing on the effects of windfarms on pelagic fish and harbour porpoises, and acoustic deterrence prior to potential harmful activities. I worked with various species of fish, crustaceans, and mussels and conducted experiments in the lab and the field using different techniques including telemetry, accelerometers, and video recordings. I currently hold the position as postdoctoral researcher and teacher at Wageningen University and Research.
