Social Dutch II

Are you an international student at Wageningen University & Research or would you like to be able to speak Dutch with your fellow students and your teachers, or carry on a basic conversation with your neighbours? Then our Social Dutch courses are just the thing for you.

Target group

These courses are particularly suitable for anyone who wants to learn Dutch for social purposes.

Course level

  • Entry level: Halfway to A1 (CEFR)
  • Level on completion: A1 (CEFR)

Contents

The main objective of these courses is to learn to communicate in Dutch. Subjects and situations that will be dealt with include introducing yourself, exchanging personal information, forms of address, formal versus informal use of the language, information on transportation, ordering in cafés and restaurants, buying and paying in shops, making appointments and typical Dutch culture. Grammar is subordinate to the communication skills and knowledge of vocabulary. Only basic grammatical subjects will be treated, such as the main sentence structure and the conjugation of verbs in the present and perfect tense.

Planning

Each part (I and II) runs for 15 classes. There will be evening classes of 1.5 hours, twice a week. In addition to the classes, you will be spending 2 or 3 hours on homework each week in order to attain the desired level. Start September, February and May.

* Any classes cancelled due to illness of the teacher will be made up at the end of the course.

Social Dutch II is offered in February, May and September each year.

Certification and exam

You receive a Wageningen in’to Languages certificate upon completion of the course. If you do not pass the exam, you can take a resit after the course. This costs € 25, which is not included in the course fees.

Prior to registration

No prior knowledge of Dutch is needed for Social Dutch part I. For Social Dutch part II some prior knowledge is needed. If you have a certificate stating you successfully passed the part I test, you will be admitted to part II without an intake interview. Students that have prior knowledge of the Dutch language and do not have a certificate can make an appointment for an interview, in order to determine which level is appropriate.
