Special collection of wild relatives of lettuce collected in Jordan
Collection of 54 Lactuca accessions from Jordan, mainly L. aculeata.
Description
The collection originated from an expedition organized in 2017 by CGN in cooperation with 5 breeding companies. The expedition was mainly focused on L. aculeata, while also several other Lactuca species were collected. The expedition report is available on this webpage. Accessions are available as a special collection because the terms and conditions regarding benefit sharing deviate from those of the Standard Material Transfer Agreement (SMTA).
Documentation of the collection
Information about the collection can be found in the spreadsheet ‘Data_CGNSC011’. This spreadsheet contains basic passport information of the accessions that can be requested, including taxonomic and collecting data. Pictures taken during collecting and seed propagation can be downloaded as zip-file from the menu on the right.
Sample information
For the majority of populations seed samples were collected from multiple plants. Samples from individual plants were kept separately for regeneration, with the exception of L. orientalis and L. undulata that each were sampled in bulk. In 2018-2020 the seed samples were regenerated by the 5 participating breeding companies, with the exception of L. orientalis and L. undulata that were regenerated by CGN. Seed samples were cleaned, and dried at 15 °C and 15% RH to reach a seed moisture content of 3-7%. For each of the regenerated samples part of the seeds were maintained for future regeneration. For distribution purposes balanced bulks were made per population. The number of plants contributing to the bulk can be found in the spreadsheet ‘Data_CGNSC011’. Seed samples are stored in vacuum-sealed bags and maintained at -20 °C in the genebank facilities of CGN. No germination tests were performed on the samples. Germination rates of newly regenerated Lactuca samples are typically high. Since dormancy is not uncommon for wild Lactuca species, it is recommended to apply dormancy-breaking procedures, such as cold-treatment, when using wild material.
Distribution procedures
Distribution bags contain 100 seeds per accession. Seeds are distributed using a Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) of which the text can be accessed on this webpage. Contract issues and payment conditions are to be arranged with the responsible curator Rob van Treuren (contact details presented below).
Liability
CGN does not accept any liability for the incorrect identity of the material, insufficient germination or the presence of diseases.
