On May 9 and 10 an R course has been organised on the topic "R and Big Data" in the context of a WU-wide effort to prepare for challenges associated with the analysis of Big Data.
Over twenty researchers, all experienced R users, have attended the course, taught by Richard Finkers (WUR, Plant Breeding), Anand Gavai (Netherlands eScience Centre), Sven Warris (WUR, Applied Bioinformatics) and Ron Wehrens (WUR, Biometris). Topics were divided over four sessions:
* case studies and modeling methods
* profiling and efficient programming
* memory management and large data sets
* HPC computing and reproducible research
The sessions consisted of a mixture of classical lectures and computer sessions. The evaluation of was very positive and provided ample opportunities for future developments - the course could well be repeated for a different audience!
