Bart Gremmen personal professor Ethics in Life Sciences
The Chair Group Philosophy is proud to announce that Bart Gremmen has been appointed as personal professor by the Rector Magnificus of Wageningen University. The post of professor holding a personal chair is awarded to researchers with an excellent track record in research and education.
Bart Gremmen (1956) studied philosophy (cum laude) at the Radboud University and received his PhD degree at the University of Twente. He worked at the Radboud University and a university for practical sciences before he arrived in 1989 in Wageningen. He has been director of the centre for Methodical Ethics and Technology Assessment (META).
In 2006 he was appointed as special professor Ethical and Social Aspects of Genomics, and in 2011 as special professor of Ethics in Life Sciences. He has been manager of the societal program of the Centre for BioSystems Genomics (CBSG), and of the society program of the Celiac Disease Consortium (CDC).
He is senior research associate at the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics. His focus is on ethical questions in relation to animal welfare in livestock contexts and developments in plant and animal biotechnology. From a pragmatic philosophical approach normative and conceptual questions will be asked about how we treat animals and how we should relate to new biotechnologies, often taking questions, concerns, and arguments of stakeholders (farmers, scientists, citizens, etc.) as a basis for critical reflection.
