Symposium ‘Improving yield prediction by combining statistics, genetics, physiology and phenotyping: the EU SPICY project in pepper’

This symposium will give an overview of the results of SPICY, a four year
EU-funded project, aimed at the development of a suite of tools for molecular breeding. The symposium will show how recent developments in genomics, phenotyping, physiological modelling, statistical genetics, and bio-informatics can be combined in an integrated approach of molecular breeding.

The philosophy of SPICY is to predict environment-conditioned complex traits like yield using an integration of crop growth and statistical genetic models. Inputs for these models are molecular markers representing quantitative trait loci (genes) for physiological traits. Some of these physiological traits can be approximated by traits obtained from image analysis and fluorescence measurements.
