At the request of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV), this report examines whether forms of pricing can promote sustainability in the meat sector. The socially desirable sustainability encompasses ecological, economic and social goals. Four main options in terms of instrument are considered: chain arrangement, tax on meat, subsidy, and levy & return system. These are not only tested for effectiveness, but also for legality, feasibility and support. A workable combination must be sought, because none of the options effectively covers all sustainability dimensions. Cooperation between government and sector is essential in this regard.
