Opening Academic Year

Wageningen University & Research is pleased to invite you to attend the ceremony of the Opening of the Academic Year 2026–2027 on Monday 31 August from 15:00–17:30hrs. The theme of this year's opening is Wild Welcome? The Dilemmas of Sharing Space.

As wildlife species return, a fundamental question emerges: how do we share space? While many welcome the return of wildlife as a success for nature conservation, this also raises important questions about how people and wildlife can coexist in an increasingly crowded world.

At the Opening of the Academic Year, we will explore these challenges and discuss how research, education, and dialogue can contribute to balanced and sustainable ways forward.

All seats for the ceremony have now been reserved. You can still register to join the ceremony online via the livestream.

Speakers

Hugh Jansman, Senior researcher Wildlife Ecology

Since 1999, he has been a wildlife ecologist at Wageningen Environmental Research (WENR). He is a member of the Team Animal Ecology, which focuses on healthy populations and ecosystems. The species he has worked with include otters, black grouse, geese, beavers, meadow birds, hamsters, raptors, ungulates, foxes, and martens. He is the project leader for the 'Wolf' programme. For the Dutch authorities, he and his team write policy advisory reports, perform post-mortem examinations of dead wolves, and conduct genetic monitoring of wolves in the Netherlands. He considers wildlife management to be 90% people management and 10% biology. Emotions, attitudes, and conflict mediation are increasingly important in the conservation of nature and in the relationship between wildlife and us humans as well. Therefore, behaviour and expertise in Human–Wildlife Conflict and Coexistence (HWCC) have his special interest.
