Breeding values for feed efficiency

Introducing breeding values for feed efficiency in the Netherlands.

This project aims to introduce breeding values for feed efficiency in The Netherlands. Therefore, the methodology needs to be set up to be able to introduce breeding values for all sires in the Netherlands based on an index that includes breeding values for milk production, live weight and conformation traits. This is a first step, but this index still lacks direct information on variation in feed intake among animals. Therefore an international collaboration is set up with 10 research and 4 industry partners in 9 countries to build a reference population with individual feed intake records that can be used to establish genomic predictions for feed intake that can be added to this index. In a last step, the breeding goal will be discussed further in international projects and the index will be consequently adapted/optimized.
