I am a PhD candidate focusing on wetland restoration within the WaterLANDS project, supervised by Dr. Milena Holmgren (WEC) and Dr. Juul Limpens (PEN). All areas within the project can be found here.

Wetlands are pressured by a myriad of climate and land-use stressors, like increased temperatures, water extraction and excessive nutrient enrichment. Large-scale restoration is necessary to reverse ongoing degradation and ensure these systems continue to provide important ecosystem functions for nature and society.

My PhD project centers around socio-ecological resilience, i.e. the capacity of an ecosystem and its people to maintain functioning and recover from perturbations. I will approach European wetland restoration from an interdisciplinary angle, combining both ecology and sociology. I  expect to use a combination of research methods, including remote sensing, experimental work, field surveys and semi-structured interviews. I am especially interested in understanding the interactions among environmental drivers and community engagement as they contribute to a safe operating space for European wetlands.
