Project: PALLIFIT: a novel molecular classification of virulence in the potato cyst nematode Globodera pallida for breeding nematode resistance in potato

Recent publications have reported the discovery of local field populations of the potato cyst nematode G. pallida with exceptionally high virulence on potato cultivars with widely used major resistances.

It is not clear if these highly virulent populations are a local phenomemon confined to specific potato growing areas. It is also not clear if the current panel of PCN resistant potato cultivars differ in susceptibility to these highly virulent populations. And, lastly, the molecular and genetic basis of the exceptional virulence in these G. pallida populations is also not clear. The PALLIFIT project will address these questions by investigating sequence diversity among field populations of G. pallida and by matching this diversity with reproductive success of the nematodes on a range of PCN resistant potato cultivars.
