The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) named its' top three blogs of 2020; this included guest blog by Dr. Sigrid Wertheim-Heck, "The impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on the diets of Hanoi's urban poor" (April 2020). Dr. Wertheim-Heck is a senior research fellow at the Environmental Policy Department and an expert in consumption sociology. Her main research interests lie in food security as well as in food system transitions and food policy.

What is the blog about?

Dr. Wertheim-Heck highlights case studies in Hanoi and brings to light the lived experiences of citizens during the pandemic. Through examining the daily lives and practices of ordinary citizens, such research addresses the conflicting duality that governs food security in Hanoi while making a call for a more diverse retail policy approach.
