Digital technologies in the agri-food sector: adoption and role of supply chain governance structures

Carlo Giua, PhD at University of Bologna, Department of Agricultural and Food Science (DISTAL), Agricultural and Food Economics and Policy Group

The aim of the seminar is to share the outcome of my six months-visiting period as PhD guest visitor at the BMO group under the supervision of Dr. Materia.

The topic of the presentation is the adoption of a specific group of digital technologies in the agri-food sector, namely the management information systems used at farm-level (FMIS). Firstly, results of a literature review carried out on the adoption of FMIS will be discussed, as a starting point for the following research steps. The literature review aimed at identifying on the one hand, the main theoretical perspectives used when analyzing the adoption of FMIS in the sector, on the other hand the drivers and barriers decision makers face in the innovation-adoption process. The literature review is almost ready to be sent to a scientific journal.

The presentation will subsequently move to the role that supply chain governance structures play in affecting the adoption of these digital technologies. As indicated by the literature review, so far the studies focused mainly on the individual dimensions of adoption, neglecting what role supply chain inter-organizational relations can play.  The conceptual framework and the research design of this second work in progress will then be presented and discussed with the audience in order to obtain feedback prior to the methodological design.
