Dik Mevius is Professor in Antimicrobial Resistance at Utrecht University.The career of Dik Mevius started in 1980 as a veterinarian for farm animals in Groningen and Friesland. This was followed by seven years of specialisation in large animal medicine at Utrecht University. His PhD studies formed the basis for his future career on the consequences of antibiotics usage in animals: drug resistance in microbial organisms. Since 1994 he works at CVI-Lelystad, part of Wageningen UR, where he built his expert group on antimicrobial resistance.
Mevius has a large national and international network on antimicrobial resistance. He coordinates the Dutch antimicrobial resistance and usage monitoring programme (MARAN). He is an independent advisor for the Ministries of Economic Affairs, Agriculture & Innovation and Public Health on antimicrobial resistance. In september 2007 he gained a Chair on Antimicrobial Resistance at Utrecht Univeristy and since April 2011 he chairs the expert group of the newly installed Dutch Veterinary Drug Authority (SDa), which defines targets for antibiotic usage in animals, reports consumption data, identifies frequent users or prescribers and controls the effect of improvement policies.
