Stomach contents of Fulmar (No NET-2008-002): 27 pieces of plastic, weight 0.2 grams

During filming for the programme ConsuMinderman (broadcast on 13 Dec 2008 at 21:30), the stomach contents of a fulmar found dead were examined at the IMARES laboratory on Texel. The bird examined for the camera turned out to have 27 pieces of plastic in its stomach, with a combined weight of almost 0.2 grams. This puts the amount of plastic in the stomach of this bird below the national average of about 30 pieces of plastic weighing 0.3 grams.

When the bird's stomach was opened, the contents were dirty, wet and stuck together. After rinsing and drying the contents became clearly visible. The two pieces of "plastic bag" that were pointed out during the shots appeared to consist of four pieces. In addition, we found various pieces of foam rubber and a large number of small plastic shards, a nylon thread and industrial plastic granules.
