SDC SEMINAR Making an ecology: Human and Fish interactions in the Upper Nile Watershed, by James McCann

This seminar describes the story of a species of fish, Cyprianid fish (L. barbus), and its co-evolutions in the waters of the upper Blue Nile (Abbay) of Ethiopia across time and in the sequencing of its adaptation to geological movement, human actions and the efforts of engineers to move, store, and redistribute Nile waters.

James McCann is Professor and Chair of History, Faculty Fellow, Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer –Range Future, Associate Director for Development, African Studies Center, Boston University. Prof. McCann is known for his work on maize (Maize and Grace) and malaria.

Professor McCann is author of Stirring the Pot: A History of African Cuisine (Athens: Ohio University Press, 2009); Maize and Grace: Africa’s Encounter with a New Crop, 1500–2000 (Harvard University Press, 2005); Green Land, Brown Land, Black Land: An Environmental History of Africa (1999); People of the Plow: An Agricultural History of Ethiopia, 1800–1990 (1995); and From Poverty to Famine in Northeast Ethiopia, 1900–1935 (1987) as well as a number of articles, book chapters, and reviews on topics in the history of Ethiopia and Africa.
