Esther Turnhout, associate professor at the Forest and Nature Conservation Policy Group of Wageningen University, part of Wageningen UR, has published a commentary article in Nature together with Bob Bloomfield, Mike Hulme, Johannes Vogel and Brian Wynne.

The commentary focuses on biodiversity science and governance and it draws lessons from the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) for the new Intergovernmental science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

The intergovernmental body for biodiversity must draw on a much broader range of knowledge and stakeholders than the IPCC, Esther Turnhout says. “In particular we argue that the centralized approach that the IPCC has adopted that privileges global actors and peer reviewed science will not be sufficient to combat biodiversity loss. Instead, effective biodiversity science and governance requires an open and experimental approach that respects different types of knowledge and multiple framings of biodiversity and includes relevant stakeholders and knowledge holders at multiple levels and scales
