On the origin of nematodes

In an attempt to reconstruct the evolution of nematodes (virtually in absence of fossils) & to generate DNA barcodes for numerous wanted and unwanted nematode species, the Laboratory of Nematology has - in cooperation with the Dutch Plant Health Service and the University of California (Riverside, USA) - generated the largest nematode tree ever published.



This tree is based on the careful comparison of functionally similar pieces of DNA from about 1,200 different nematode species. This information allows us for instance to identify and quantify unwanted (pathogenic) species in large pools harmless or beneficial nematodes.
