Responsible and reflective education - a guide for universities of Applied Sciences for Education as Sustainability

We are living in a fast-changing world over the edge of the ecological boundaries of our planet. The alarm of Earth Overshoot Day is giving us a wake-up call days earlier each year. We are living in the spare time of our planet with our eyes wide shut. What do we see when we really open our eyes and reflect on the current situation of Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) in the Netherlands? Do they take the responsibility society has granted them? Are their graduates capable of acting adequately with respect to the planet and society?

This research explores the concept of 'Education as Sustainability' (EaS), which is considered to be the highest stage of sustainability in education. This stage is rarely seen in UAS. Among the questions to be answered are these: What is 'Education as sustainability'?' What do we find of the principles and manifestation of EaS in current UAS education? How can EaS be enacted in UAS in practice? In the end, the research aims to provide guidelines for UAS how to stay relevant in the light of the future of our society and our planet.

About Korrie Hoekstra

Korrie has over 30 years of experience as a lecturer in Communication and Innovation at Van Hall Larenstein, University of Applied Sciences. As a member of the lecturers team Environmental Sciences, she co-designed learning environments for national and international projects. Based on her experience in- and outside school she developed with colleagues a minor called Feeding our planet. It is this minor and its students that were the inspiration for the start of her PhD research.

Her motto is: Finding a balance in education in order not to drop over the edge of our planetary boundaries, connects not only students with society, but also students with their talents to contribute to a sustainable world.
