Just like 90% of the students I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do with my thesis. Last academic year, in January, I followed the course Frontiers in Medical and Veterinary Biology (ENT-51306) which introduced me for the “first time” to Caenorhabditis elegans. Of course, I had heard of it before, but I’ve never had the possibility to work with this worm! So, after the first week of the practical I was 100% certain that I wanted to work with this awesome worm! I asked Mark (my practical supervisor) if there were any topics available that were related to human diseases. And yes, there was!

C. elegans has conquered a small place in my heart

Fast forward: in April I started my BSc. thesis related to Parkinson’s disease. Due to the corona crisis I was not able to go onto the lab. Luckily, there was enough data collected in the previous years on my subject. Therefore, with the guidance of Mark (now my thesis supervisor), I was able to conduct data analysis.

Writing my thesis was a tough task, however, with the help and guidance of the thesis ring, Mark, and coffee I never lost my mind and I was able to finish my thesis in time. As a result: C. elegans (and nematology) has conquered a small place in my heart.
