EB statement on sexually transgressive behaviour
The stories on sexually transgressive behaviour in the world of entertainment, followed by reports of similar behaviour in the sectors of politics and sports, have impacted us and have sparked discourse within our organisation. This came in addition to disturbing data from Amnesty, among others, about sexual assaults on students. Immediately after this, our confidential advisers reached out to students and employees and, in cooperation with the mayor, our rector magnificus has started talks with student associations.
WUR stands for a safe study and working environment, both physically and socially. We are aware of the fact that a university and research environment is no different from entertaianment, politics and sports, and that sexually transgressive behavior may also occur within our WUR community. We, too, are familiar with power differences and thus with circumstances that make addressing sexual undesired behaviour difficult.
We do not tolerate sexual intimidation or transgressive behaviour in any way or situation. We take reports extremely seriously, and each incident is one too many. We, therefore, ask you to report incidents and address others so that, together, we can ensure a safe work and study environment in which everyone feels free to speak up against boundary-crossing behaviour.
This is a joint responsibility that must be anchored in our culture. A safe environment calls for continued focus and attantion.

Integrity and privacy in general
Generally speaking, integrity demands that all employees and students behave with integrity when teaching, doing research and providing (social) services. The Integrity Code of Wageningen University & Research and the current Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity together form the most important guidelines for acting with integrity on the part of employees and, more specifically, scientists at Wageningen University & Research.
In addition, WUR has drawn up an anti-corruption code for personnel involved in international projects. This code provides rules for doing business in a fair and ethical manner with countries that have a low corruption index (CPI), or with which no business can be done based on UN sanctions policy.
In addition to these codes, there are a number of specific regulations, agreements and complaint procedures to safeguard integrity. All our employees act in full accordance with these mandatory rules of conduct and hold each other accountable.
In addition to safeguarding integrity, Wageningen University & Research also has a duty of care concerning private data that it (temporarily) possesses on its staff, students and others. Wageningen University & Research puts great value on the fact that the organisation treats private information with care. Wageningen University creates policy and organises processes in such a way that they comply with the requirements of the General Data Protection Act.
All employees and students of Wageningen University & Research must comply with the Integrity Code of Wageningen University & Research and its principles for acting with integrity: Scrupulous, Reliable, Independent, Socially Responsible and Inspiring and safe working environment. The Regulations Ancillary Activities applies to ancillary activities. It is important that both the internal organisation and potential clients have insight into work for third parties. This prevents (the suggestion of) a conflict of interests. This means that all employees must ask prior written permission to perform ancillary activities. And it is especially important for scientists (including professors) that they publish their work for third parties in accordance with the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity on the profile pages of the website of Wageningen University & Research (see also text below).
In their employment contract new employees sign the Integrity Code Wageningen University & Research, the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity, the network regulations and they list their work for third parties. Wageningen University & Research follows regulations used in complaint procedures regarding abuse, such as the Whistleblower’s Regulations and the Complaints procedure undesirable behaviour and it offers help and support in dealing with improper behaviour.
With regard to scientific integrity, WUR acts in accordance with the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity is applicable. This Code is based on the following, widely supported principles namely: honesty, scrupulousness, transparency, independence and responsibility. Acting with integrity is the main pillar of good scientific practice and is an essential prerequisite for creating trust in and maintaining the credibility of science.
At WUR we collect a lot of personal data and we treat this very carefully. In addition, the European privacy act, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), stipulates strict conditions for collecting, using and storing personal data. It is good to realise that, at WUR, we organise the processes so that we comply with the demands of this act. WUR will use personal data only for the purpose for which they were collected unless otherwise granted by the explicit permission of the parties involved.
The policy document processing personal data Wageningen University & Research describes the content of the AVG, the frameworks that we use at WUR, the roles and responsibilities we have and how we should safely and consciously handle private data. The Regulation on the Protection of Personal Data describes how the tasks, responsibilities and procedures relating to the processing of personal data for education, research and administration are applied. The Regulation on Camera Surveillance explains how we work with camera surveillance and which rules and procedures apply to the registration and processing of the images in relation to safety and privacy.
Rights of persons whose personal data are stored by Wageningen University & Research (WUR)
You have the right to request WUR to inspect your personal data and/or to improve, modify, or transfer them as well as the right to object to the processing of personal data.
As stated in the Data Protection Regulations, WUR has overviews for employees on the payroll, employees not on the payroll, students, and relations that provide you with insight into WUR’s use of personal data, the nature of this personal data and to whom this data is supplied.
If you want to exercise your rights as a data subject, below is a list of available forms with which you can submit a request regarding your personal data. Your request will remain in WUR’s archive for a period of one year.
Because we want to safeguard their privacy but also the privacy of others, data subjects living or working in The Netherlands must identify themselves in person at the GDPR Desk of Wageningen University & Research when submitting a form. As an exception, data subjects living or working outside of The Netherlands can send their form by post to Wageningen University & Research. You will find the address on the form. Your identity will be checked via Live HD video call.
