Wageningen University is growing! We will open our new teaching building Orion at the Wageningen Campus this year. Orion will have modern atmosphere, and will provide extra teaching facilities and catering for 2600 students. Flexibility and sustainability are paramount to the design of this building. Smart ventilation and heating ensure an extremely low level of energy consumption. One of the eye catchers of the building is the large spaceship-shaped lecture hall that will be located on the first floor. The hall will be able to host 700 people and can be divided into six smaller spaces by placing soundproof walls. The festive opening of Orion will take place in September.
Taste, smell and feel: with due pride, we would like to welcome FrieslandCampina’s new dairy research centre to the Wageningen Campus. The sustainable building will contain laboratories, areas for taste tests, a pilot plant and an Experience Centre with an innovative kitchen and an experimental bakery. Wageningen UR is known for cooperating with businesses and governmental organisations. The new FrieslandCampina building will be a visible manifestation of this.
On March 9, 1918, Wageningen University, formerly a local agricultural college, officially became an academic institution. During the next 95 years Wageningen University developed into a broad based knowledge institute with an international appeal. We are the fastest growing university in the Netherlands and we are listed as the second institution in the world in our domain: these are developments to be proud of. From local agricultural college to internationally renowned knowledge institute: we are approaching our centennial, yet we feel younger than ever!
Fast translation of scientific breakthroughs into education and practical solutions: that was the basis for the merger between the University, the Research Institutes and the Institutes for Applied Research in 1998. During the past 15 years, government, businesses, universities and research centres have been successfully collaborating, innovating and increasing knowledge at the Wageningen Campus. The new government even called Wageningen UR the example of an innovation centre where research institutions meet the future challenges of society together with commercial enterprises.
