The book will be used by scientists and students in the diverse fields of livestock science worldwide. The livestock industrial scientists repeatedly asked to show the biological working mechanism of livestock improvements. Systems biology is the answer to many of these questions.
Wageningen UR Researchers Marinus te Pas and Henri Woelders of the Animal Breeding and Genomics Centre and André Bannink of the Centre for Animal Nutrition, have edited the book “Systems biology and livestock Science”.
In medical science systems biology is already used for a decade or more to integrate the knowledge on the regulation of host-pathogen interactions and metabolic diseases. Recent developments in livestock genomics science creating large streams of data combined with physiological information produces growing scientific knowledge and insights in the biological regulation of traits. To use all this new information the need for an integrated approach combining all knowledge is growing. Systems biology is the answer to this. It integrates “omics”, other biological disciplines, mathematical modelling, and other sciences including breeding science, etc. However, systems biology is new for livestock science. Therefore, Wiley publishers asked us to take the lead in editing a book on the theme. International experts worldwide were interested in contributing chapters in their fields of expertise. The book therefore contains information on systems biology from feeding an animal to keeping the animal healthy and productive. Livestock industry scientists recognized the importance of systems biology for the future of livestock science and livestock production.
