Support research on global food security through the Food Security Fund

The goal of the Food Security Fund is to contribute to global food security. It is well established that demand for food will increase substantially in the next few decades. Opinions differ on how this demand could best be met. The Food Security Fund supports research that collects objective data that can contribute to this discussion.

Why the Food Security Fund?

Our world is changing. The world population is growing fast and prosperity is increasing in many regions. Around the world, land use for food production is reaching its limits. The climate is visibly changing while fossil fuels are becoming ever scarcer. Meanwhile, people attach more importance to healthy, safe and sufficient food.

The impact of your gift

The demand for high-quality protein, such as dairy and meat, will increase significantly and may in fact double by 2050. Opinions differ on how this demand could best be met. There are two main directions that are very distinct: (1) sustainable intensification that relies on high technology input, with high productivity and resource efficiency on the one hand, and (2) organic and other types of low-input farming on the other. Both directions claim to be able to feed the world and realize maximum sustainability. Thanks to your gift the fund will be able to invest in a research programme, executed by Wageningen UR, that collects objective data that can contribute to this discussion.

Committee

The University Fund Wageningen is responsible for the administration and reporting. A committee consisting of Mr Aalt Dijkhuizen, Mr Jan van Unen and Mr Martin Scholten will supervise the successful realisation of the goal of the project on behalf of the fund, together with an international steering committee.
