Teacher of the Year Award

Ever since 1981 high quality education on the university is stimulated by rewarding the teachers most concerned with their students and their way of teaching. Every year, University Fund Wageningen organizes the Teacher of the Year Award. Students can vote for their favourite teachers, after which our student jury hands out the price. The winning teacher and the nominees receive money they can spend on new education goals.

The longlist of 2020 is known! Is your favorite teacher on the list?

Longlist 2020

The long list for the election of Teacher of the Year has been made public. Two new names are featured on the list: Arnold van Vliet and Bastiaan Engel. A total of fifteen teachers have been nominated for the award for best WUR-teacher.

Some former winners are also nominated, such as Henry van den Brand (2018), Roel Dijksma (2016) and Jessica Duncan (2017). A total of  17.53 per cent of the students cast a vote for their favourite teacher.

Winner 2019

And the winner of the Teacher of the Year Award is...

Associate professor of Resource Ecology Fred de Boer! This is the first time De Boer has won the prize. ‘I didn’t see this coming.’

The jury, which is made up of eight students from different degree programmes and of different nationalities, picked De Boer because he is ‘extremely enthusiastic’ and ‘a master of the use of examples to clarify a message’. Jury chair Suzanne Ruiten: ‘With his boundless enthusiasm, Fred tries to get his passion for nature and ecology across to his students in a way that helps them understand the subject completely. His lessons are quite theatrical. Fred has a full house of 200 students sitting on the edge of their chairs. You could almost hear a pin drop. That’s the way to do it, and that’s how he does it.’

Longlist Teacher of the Year 2019

The longlist for the Teacher of the Year award 2019 has been announced. Four lecturers have made their first appearance on the list: Anneke Valk, Elke Scholten, Kris van ’t Klooster and Tijs Ketelaar.

These four and thirteen other nominees are in the running for the crown as Teacher of the Year 2019. Anneke Valk is lecturer in Experimental Zoology, Elke Scholten is associate professor of Food Physics, Kris van ’t Klooster is lecturer in Plant Physiology and Tijs Ketelaar is assistant professor of Cell Biology. Many former laureates have entered the race for another round too, like last year’s winner Henry van den Brand, Jessica Duncan (2017) and Roel Dijksma (2016). Like last year, around 21 percent of the students who could vote did so.

‘Convince before the teaching can commence’Tijs Ketelaar was told of his occurrence on the longlist last Thursday. ‘A pleasant surprise. It means a lot that I am able to reach the students. If they voted for me, it must mean my message was conveyed.’ Ketelaar learned to teach from André van Lammeren, who received the award in 2010 (article in Dutch). ‘He told me that the first thing one should do is convince people why it is worth learning more about a certain subject. Once they are convinced, the teaching can commence.’ Van Lammeren has retired several years ago. ‘At least, officially. We still call upon him for a few courses’, says Ketelaar.

‘Structure and innovations’Lecturer in Food Chemistry Julia Diederen has made the longlist for the fourth time in five years. ‘It’s great; a confirmation that I’m on the right path and that the students appreciate what I do. Of course, I don’t know the exact reasons they vote for me, but evaluations have shown that students appreciate the structured coordination of the course.’ Diederen puts a lot of work into innovations in education. ‘I always analyse how the learning process could be improved. In Food Chemistry, I teach 260 students simultaneously, so I really need to. I therefore try to involve digital education in a proper way, to keep it balanced with face-to-face contact. And I give the students many activating assignments during my lectures.’

The teachers who have made the longlist will be interviewed by this year’s student jury, which is composed of eight students from various programmes and of different nationalities. They will choose a top five (shortlist) and subsequently a winner. Head of the jury Suzanne Ruijten: ‘We are looking for a lecturer who is passionate and involved, and who keeps improving on their teaching.’ Toshihiro Takada is one of the jury members. ‘I am from Japan, where the educational culture is very different. The hierarchy is very prevalent. It is much more interactive here. An election for teacher of the year could never happen there, but I like the idea that it is possible here.’

Winner 2018

Dr. ir. Henry van den Brand is the winner of the Teacher of the Year Award 2018. The student jury, which attended a lecture by Van den Brand, sees that he likes to share the enthusiasm he has for his profession with his students. He does not merely teach, he tells stories by linking his own experiences as a farmer to the relevance for his profession. To illustrate his stories Van den Brand uses old fashioned chalkboard and chalk. 'I am stunned,' was the emotional reaction of the teacher.

Henry is associate professor at the chairgroup Adaptation Physiology, where he started in 2001 without any experience in teaching. According the jury Henry is an enthusiastic and involved teacher. He does not just gives lectures, he tells stories. During his lectures, the room is full of interested students.

The winner of the Teacher of the Year Award was announced during the opening of the Month of Education on Tuesday 24 April 2018. Unfortunately, Henry wasn’t able to attend the ceremony. His colleague Bas Kemp was there to receive the Award. Two days after the ceremony, when Henry was back in Wageningen, the jury visited him to personally congratulate him.

The award

In 1981 University Fund Wageningen (at that time the Landbouwhogeschoolfonds) began presenting the Education Award once every four years, in addition to the Research Award, the Entrepreneurs Award and the Press Award. In 1996 the Education Award was replaced by the Teacher of the Year Award to emphasise the important role of instructors in education. This award was presened in 1996 and 2000.

In 2003 the Executive Committee of the Foundation decided to publicly honour one instructor every year with the aim of focusing attention on the importance of good education and to reward instructors who, especially in the opinion of their students, have excelled as a teacher. Students therefore play an important role in deciding the winner of the Teacher of the Year Award. the Award consists of a replica of the statue 'De Leermeester' by Jan Praet (the original is located in front of the Leeuwenborch), a certificate of appreciation and the jury report. Also all nominees on the shortlist receive a cash prize of € 2500.

This new award was presented first in 2004. Every year from then on, six to eight students join effors as members of the Teacher of the Year jury. With the support of University Fund they promote the eclections, in which all students in their second year and up can vote for a maximum of three of the 250 by course evaluations selected teachers. Next the jury has an in-depth interview with all the chosen teachers about different aspects of educating. From that a shortlist of nominees is made and a provisional winner is presented to the Executive Committee of the Foundation. Based on the nomination by the jury and in name of the Executive Committee of the Foundation, the winner of the Teacher of the Year Award is announced at the beginning of each calendar year.
