In December 2019, an outbreak of a new coronavirus, also called SARS CoV-2, started in the Wuhan region of China. The virus can cause COVID-19 disease. Measures are being taken worldwide to prevent further spread of the virus.
The virus has also been found in the Netherlands. This page contains more information about the research that Wageningen University & Research (WUR) conducts into infectious animal diseases and our contributions in developing a vaccine.
Research into vaccine development
The Laboratory of Virology in Wageningen contributes to vaccine development by producing particular proteins that are to be used in a COVID-19 vaccine.
Research into infectious animal diseases
There is a wide variety of corona viruses in nature that can cause disease in many animal species. The COVID-19 virus is a zoonosis, which means that the disease can be transmitted from animals to humans. Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) conducts research into infectious animal diseases in the Netherlands.
