Coronavirus (COVID-19)

In December 2019, an outbreak of a new coronavirus, also called SARS CoV-2, started in the Wuhan region of China. The virus can cause COVID-19 disease. Measures are being taken worldwide to prevent further spread of the virus.

The virus has also been found in the Netherlands. This page contains more information about the research that Wageningen University & Research (WUR) conducts into vaccines, infectious animal diseases, the consequences of the coronavirus for agriculture and diagnostics for possible COVID-19 patients.

Research into vaccines

The Laboratory of Virology in Wageningen contributes to vaccine development by producing particular proteins that are to be used in a COVID-19 vaccine.

Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) supports testing COVID-19 vaccines for efficacy and safety, and is involved in developing an intranasal vaccin against COVID-19.

Research into infectious animal diseases

There is a wide variety of corona viruses in nature that can cause disease in many animal species.
