Fellowships

WIAS invites PhD candidates who wish to travel abroad, post-docs who want to write a grant proposal and WIAS staff members who wish to invite guest researchers to submit a proposal for a WIAS fellowship. The activities should start in 2018.

Research fellowships

These grants are meant to give WIAS staff members the chance to invite external researchers to spend a few months at a WIAS Chair group. This grant covers housing up to €800 per month and travel costs to Wageningen and will be administered via the chair group of the PhD candidate.

Conditions:

• Stay up to a maximum of 6 months, starting in 2018

• Budget meant to cover the costs of travel to Wageningen (including visa) and housing

• Not meant for extending stay of WIAS PhD candidates

• The visiting researcher should contribute to the research of the hosting Chair group

• The visiting researcher should actively contribute to WIAS (e.g. PhD course, seminars, lecture, etc.)

• Within 4 weeks after the visit, a short evaluation (1/2 A4) should be sent to WIAS

Selection is based upon:

• Quality of the researcher

• Envisaged contribution to WIAS and the scientific community of Wageningen University

• Expectations on establishing international networks or long term work relations

All WIAS staff members may apply for a Research fellowship by submitting the application form attached to this e-mail. Proposals should be submitted using the format provided below before 2 July 2018 to janneke.vanseters@wur.nl.

PhD fellowships

This grant allows PhD candidates to visit a top research institute/university abroad. This grant can be used to attend an international PhD course or to visit a research group abroad. Fieldwork or other research that is already covered in the original PhD project is not eligible for this grant. This grant covers expenses up to €1000 per month with a maximum of €3500 (including travel costs) and will be administered via the chair group of the PhD candidate.

Conditions:

• Stay up to maximum of 4 months, starting in 2018

• Budget meant to cover the costs of travel and housing

• Final admittance to the PhD programme (this means including a positive Go-decision)

• Clear added value to the research project of the PhD candidate (the visit should be an extra activity that is initiated by the PhD candidate, not an integral part of the original project as described in the project proposal)

• Written confirmation of host institute before reimbursement

• Within 4 weeks after the visit, a short evaluation (1/2 A4) should be sent to WIAS

• Quality of the proposal

• Quality of host institute

All WIAS PhD candidates may apply for a PhD fellowship by submitting the application form attached to this e-mail. Proposals should be submitted using the format provided below before 2 July 2018 to janneke.vanseters@wur.nl.

Postdoc (recently graduated) fellowships

This grant gives recently graduated researchers the opportunity to spend 3 months on writing a grant proposal that primarily contributes to the scientific career of the candidate (such as NWO-Rubicon proposal).

• The grant consists of 3 months’ salary with payment of overhead, starting in 2018

• After 3 months, the proposal must be sent to WIAS for evaluation

• The grant proposal must be submitted to a suitable organisation (such as NWO) and WIAS should be informed about the outcome of the selection procedure (approved or not).

Conditions:

• Graduation in 2018, thesis needs to be approved by the thesis committee

• Approval of Chair holder

• Mention the funding source

• The fellowship may not be used as an extension of the PhD project

• Quality of host institute
