We are looking for

European agriculture is becoming increasingly specialized. The shift towards mixed farming systems potentially leads to more sustainability and resilience to shocks. However, these potential gains are thus far not quantified. Do you want to contribute to the quantitative assessment and design of mixed farming and agro-forestry systems throughout Europe?

The Business Economics (BEC) group starts up a PhD project focusing on the analysis of efficiency and resilience of mixed farming and agro-forestry systems at various scales, including the farm, regional, community and national scale. The project aims to understand the tradeoffs between efficiency, resilience, climate change mitigation potential, delivery of eco-system services and rural development. Best practices can vary across regions depending on natural resources, climate and desired system functions. The project uses quantitative research methods and should result in publishable research output.

We ask

We invite applications for the PhD position from candidates with:

  • an MSc degree in a discipline relevant to the PhD project (e.g. agricultural economics, environmental economics, business economics);
  • proven excellent analytical and writing skills;
  • knowledge of quantitative methods (e.g. economic modelling, efficiency analysis);  
  • passion about research;
  • affinity with agriculture is an advantage.

We offer

We offer a challenging, multi-disciplinary and future-oriented research project, embedded in a stimulating scientific environment.

In principle this is a 48 month PhD position. We offer you a temporary contract for 18 months which will be extended with 30 months if you perform well. Salary will increase from € 2325,- gross per month in the first year up to € 2972,- in the last year, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours a week) in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement Dutch Universities.
In addition, we offer:

  • 8% holiday allowance;
  • a structural year-end bonus of 8.3%;
