Secondary School Students

Have you ever wondered whether we’ll be able to feed 10 billion people around the world? A world where rural areas are replaced by large cities and where oceans are critically polluted. A world where the climate changes as a result of the growing populations, increasing GHG emissions, rising sea levels, etc.

Are you a secondary school student and would you like to think about these kind of questions / problems? Join the Wageningen Borlaug Youth Institute and advise about which changes, according to you, are needed for our future!

Your world is in your hands

Our planet earth is too small to keep increasing the amount of agricultural activities. Not all types of land are suitable for agriculture. Also, climate change and pollution affects land quality (and fertility). We will need to develop qualitatively better and safer food production. Should we focus on biological farming, bio-technology or genetical manipulation? Do we need to grow more food or should we focus on a better distribution of food?

Join us and think about this challenge. How will we feed future populations so that everybody can live on this planet under healthy and safe circumstances? Will you help us with finding solutions to the world food problem? Will you contribute to a better future?! Participate in the Wageningen Borlaug Youth Institute and get the chance to win a trip and attend a meeting in the United States together with people from all around the world.

Why participate?

  • You can really have an impact and think with us
  • Students and leading scientists will supervise you during your work / assignment

Who can participate?

The project focuses on 15-to-18-year-old students in secondary school.

Are you 15 to 18 years old and currently in secondary school? If so, you can participate in an excellence assignment at school during your free hours or on your own initiative. Choose a subject, conduct your own research and come up with your advice concerning this problem. Participate and read below what the project entails!

Are you currently in your last year of secondary school? If so, you can participate with your profile paper or master experiment. Have you already chosen your subject and does this relate to the world food problem? Or maybe you are still considering which subject to choose and you would like to participate in this project? Join and look at ‘How to participate’ to see a step-by-step overview on how to sign up!

How to participate?

Follow step 1 to 6 and become part of the Wageningen Borlaug Youth Institute.

Step 1: Select your topic

You will start by choosing a subject. What changes are required to feed our future generations? This could for example be the use of drones and robots in agriculture. To be inspired, check step 1 to see subjects and define your research question.

Step 2: Sign up

Sign up to be supervised during your profile paper, master experiment, excellence assignment or during your own research in the period of October 2017 till April 2018. By applying you will be invited to a workshop day where you will meet other participating secondary school students.

Step 3: Get extra support

Get extra support in how to conduct scientific research.

Step 4: Attend workshops

Attend workshops to learn how to present, debate and vlog.

Step 5: Present your advice

Create your own vlogs which will be presented to world leaders, CEOs and scientists. Present your advice about the required adjustments to feed the future world population. Submit your vlog before May 2018.
