English Speaking & Pronunciation 2 (online course)

Do you wish you were able to speak English even more fluently? Do you sometimes struggle with clear or accurate pronunciation in English? Or did you take the Speaking & Pronunciation 1 course and would you like to keep working on your personal learning goals?
This online course helps you to further improve all aspects of pronunciation – individual sounds, your intonation, your emphasis points in speech, and sounding more natural when speaking English. It also offers plenty of opportunities for fluency practice and feedback on your use of English.

This course is taught entirely online using the Virtual Classroom in Brightspace.

Target group

English Speaking & Pronunciation 2 is for Bachelor’s and Master’s students who have taken the English Speaking & Pronunciation 1 course and would like to keep working on the personal learning plan they developed during that course.

This course is also for those looking to further improve their communication skills with regards to their fluency in speaking English and for anyone wishing to work on their pronunciation.

The maximum number of participants per group is 16.

Course level

English Speaking & Pronunciation 2: OOPT 90 and up.

Course content

Each session will focus on a specific learning goal regarding fluency. During the first course, participants made a personal learning plan. Now there will be ample opportunity for practice and feedback. Topics covered include individual sounds, word and sentence stress, intonation, chunking and pausing, and developing clear articulation and emphasis. The course will have a very practical focus, thus providing plenty of time to practise speaking and listening, including individual learning goals.

After completing English Speaking & Pronunciation 2, you may also be interested in one of the English Skills Labs, Academic Writing or English Presenting & Performance.

    Planning

    This course consists of one class a week for 8 weeks. Each class is 1 hour and 45 minutes. You should expect to spend 2 to 3 hours on homework each week to reach the desired level.

    The course English Speaking & Pronunciation 2 is offered annually in January, April and at the end of September/beginning of October.

    Course material

    Participants will have access to Blackboard, where all the required materials will be available.

    Certification and exam

    To receive a Wageningen in'to Languages certificate, a minimum attendance of 80% is required.

    Before registration:

    1. Oxford Placement Test Participants in English Speaking & Pronunciation 2 need an OOPT score of 90 or higher.

    For English Speaking & Pronunciation 2 an OOPT score of 90 or higher required. You can apply for the online OOPT by emailing us at into@wur.nl.You will then receive an email containing a login code and an explanation of the test. You can take the test when it suits you. We advise you, however, to do so at your earliest opportunity. Tip: Make sure you are able to take the test without being disturbed. The test lasts a maximum of 80 minutes. It is not possible to pause the test and finish it at a later time. The test contains a listening component. Please use good headphones or speakers to listen to the audio fragments.     3. Video or audio recording. To help the teacher to assess your individual pronunciation and speaking needs, please submit an video or audio recording of 2-3 minutes. Do not prepare or rehearse the recording or read a script but simply talk about yourself freely. You can introduce yourself, what you study and talk about your hobbies or interests.
