This course is intended for bachelor's and master's students of Wageningen University & Research who want to further improve their Dutch language skills.

Entry level: A2 (CEFR)
Level on completion: Halfway to B1 (CEFR)

Course content

The main objective of these courses is to learn to communicate in Dutch. All skills are developed: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

What will this course teach you?

More attention than in the Social Dutch-courses 1 to 3 is given to such matters as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Reading and writing skills are mostly practiced in the time allotted for self-study.

After this course, you will be able to:

Grammar is always covered in a communication context and for functional purposes.

Example: When you learn to formulate advice, you will also learn about the use of the construction “ik zou...” as knowledge about this grammatical topic is useful and relevant at this level for formulating advice in a respectful way.

Culture and history influence the language of a country. That is why this course will also pay attention to interesting and relevant aspects of Dutch culture and history. Knowledge about these topics will make it easier to understand Dutch people and their responses.

Example:

How outspoken will a Dutch person be when you give them bad news? How normal is it in the Netherlands to show your emotions in the workplace or in a lecture? Do you have to wait for someone to ask for your opinion before giving it? How open are Dutch people about the type of education they’ve completed?
