Reindeers

Reindeers are obviously one of the first associations you make when thinking of Lapland. While it is very unlikely to see them close where people live, it is more likely to encounter them while driving a bit outside.

The funny thing is that they do not mind cars passing them (or even stopping directly next to them), they run away as soon as someone opens the car door and puts a foot on the ground. Nevertheless, it is indeed warmer to observe them from the inside of the car. Interesting is that it is forbidden to hunt reindeers in Finland since each animal is owned by someone. Even though I of course did not plan to hunt, I did try reindeer meat in a restaurant when my family visited me. It truly was delicious! Traditionally they serve it with mashed potatoes and red berries. But still, when seeing them in the nature, I think of everything else but food ;) .
