Inadequate water supply, sanitation, waste collection and waste management systems are the cause of serious urban pollution and health hazards in many Asian, African and Latin American cities. The MSc programme Urban Environmental Management is an international and interactive programme providing a balanced curriculum of theory, tools and application. It aims to train students like you to guide the future along the path of sustainable urbanisation.

Aim of the programme

The programme emphasises the development of

  • a cross-disciplinary outlook,
  • critical thinking,
  • analytical, problem-solving and practical decision-making skills

through a combination of teamwork, simulation exercises, field trips and an individual research project.    

Education

The coursework of the MSc Urban Environmental Management consists of one foundation course (common across all majors), at least two urban courses (out of four) which are specific for this programme and two to three courses that are unique to the major of your choice. The course work concludes with the European Workshop, which is an extensive fieldwork assignment which is commissioned by a local authority and carried out in a selected country of the European Union.

Internship and thesis

The internship programme (16 weeks) provides a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in a country and organisation of your choice.

The thesis programme (24 weeks) is the individual research project that forms the core component of this Master programme. Within the MSc Urban Environmental management programme, students can major in one out of seven disciplines:

  • Environmental Policy (ENP);
  • Environmental Economics (ENR);
  • Environmental Systems Analysis (ESA);
  • Urban Environmental Technology and Management (ETE).  
  • Geo-Information Science and Remote Sensing (GRS);
  • Land Use Planning (LUP);
  • Management Studies (MST).

Climate-KIC

Interested in Climate Change and entrepreneurship? With the master Urban Environmental Management you can participate in the Climate-KIC programme. This programme offers you the possibility to discuss your innovative ideas on climate change mitigation and adaptation options together with students from several other European universities.
