Marine Microbial Ecology

Marine Microbial Ecology

Marine Microbial Ecology aims to understand and apply symbiotic interactions between marine microorganisms and their hosts.

These interactions are of particular interest in the marine environment because of their early appearance in evolution. In addition, the deeper oceans are one of the last natural frontiers on Earth and little is known about the ecology and evolution of the microorganisms that inhabit these waters. The more-applied aspects of the research are focussed on discovering bioactive compounds that can be used for pharmaceutical purposes (mostly microbes associated to sponges and other marine invertebrates) and how microbes can be used to make aquaculture practice more sustainable.
