Chain elongation from biomass streams - Production of long MCFA

Sustainable and cost effective biochemical/biofuel production is a key factor for the reduction of anthropogenic climate change as well as for the future development of a bio-based economy. The carboxylate platform is a novel biotechnological approach which provides the ability to convert complex organic wastes into valuable and energy-dense chemicals such as medium chain fatty acids (MCFA). Caproic acid (C6) is the common product in chain elongation reactors. However, production of the longer MCFA capric acid (C8), which in theory can be achieved under more selective conditions, will broaden the product spectrum of the carboxylate platform and the potential impact on replacing fossil based chemicals with biobased chemicals.
