Prof. dr. Johan Verreth
Area of interest
The development of aquaculture and aquaculture farming systems constitute the broad area of
interest of prof. Johan Verreth. His particular interest goes to the ecological sustainability of fish farming.
Relevant research
Johan Verreth has been working on the fate of nutrients and nutrient dynamics in different production
systems of fish, e.g., in ponds, in recirculating aquaculture systems, and more lately also at the
animal level. His main focus of interest is on the adaptive responses of the animal to its (rearing
and/or living) environment, how the animal in the context of a particular production and farming
system influences its environment and how the latter determines the performance and response of the
fish. Since end 2000, Johan Verreth is leading the Aquaculture and Fisheries Group (AFI) and as such he is responsible for the development of science and education in that team. Under his guidance, AFI’s
research concentrated on the interface between animal, (a)biotic environment and human use. He
personally interacts mostly with research on the interface between nutrition and water quality in
intensive production systems and on sustainability assessments of farmed seafood.
