Jan Rombout (1948) was appointed at the Department of Zoology in 1972 as Assistant Professor in Developmental Biology and Functional Histology. From 1986 till 2011 he was Associate Professor in Cell Biology and Immunology and his research was predominantly dedicated to mucosal immunology of fish and the ontogeny of fish immunity. As a consequence special attention was paid to the possibility of oral vaccination, that finally resulted in several EU-projects. During this period he participated in the editorial boards of Fish and Shellfish Immunology (FSIM) and Developmental and Comparative Immunology (DCI). Together with Wim van Muiswinkel, Egbert Egberts and Rene Stet he organised the 6th ISDCI-Congress in Wageningen. The past decennium he was also active in the Executive Board of the European Veterinary Immunology Group. Between 1980 and 2011 he was frequently member of the Biology Education Committee of WUR and was involved in several study reorganisation plans. From 2007 he is part-time (20%) Adjunct Professor at The Nordland University in Bodø (Norway) and involved in projects on mucosal immunity of cod and oral vaccination of shrimp. In 2011 he retired from Wageningen University and in 2013 he will retire at the Nordland University.
