Our MSc Programme

The Spatial Planning programme focuses on both the organization of the planning processes as well as on the theoretical and practical knowledge needed for planning. As a result the programme deals with planning theory and methodology, knowledge about the landscape, for instance water and cultural heritage and is strongly linked to (new) developments in planning practice. It is grounded in the social and natural sciences. The programme consists of three parts:

  1. Courses dealing with theory and methodology about planning processes in literature and practice
  2. Courses focussing on substantial knowledge for instance about water, cultural heritage, ecology, management, economics.
  3. Internship and final thesis in which theory, methodology and substantial knowlegde is combined.

In the first part different courses will guide you in building your knowledge about different planning theories and methodologies. In four courses important, new or eye catching literature about planning will be discussed in relation to examples from planning practice. A variety of guest lecturers from in and outside the university will support these courses with their knowledge.

In the second set of courses you can choose your own focus or subject. In planning processes substantial knowledge about soils, traffic, ecology and others play an important role. During your programme you have the opportunity to follow courses about one of the varies subjects related to planning. These courses you follow at different chairgroups at the university specialized in your field of interest.

The third and last part of the programme consists of an internship and a final thesis or master thesis. Your internship will give you the opportunity to have a look in companies or governmental agencies working in the field of planning. During you master thesis you combine all the knowledge in a large research project.
