My research focus

My research focus

Prins’ research focuses on understanding herbivory in a spatial context. He showed how food plants react to grazing [2,3], and how wild herbivores can gear their revisitation interval to the regrowth speed of their resource [2,3]. Because the home range of grazing herbivores encompasses many localities where grazing lawns are maintained by grazing [3], herbivores have to move between these localities so as to be able to optimally use this regrowth [3,4,5]. Many grazing wild herbivores occur in groups, which are often large to very large. Prins showed that the evolution of a high degree of sociality in these graminivorous herbivores could be expected because of the mutual benefits group members have of social grazing [3,6,7]. One of the pivotal questions in his work is to discover how herbivores move through the terrain, often in areas where many predators lurk [8,9,10,11] and where keeping contact is difficult [3], and reach collective decisions about where to graze. His work on social decision-making (termed "voting") in African buffalo is well known [3,7]. Spatial ecology, especially in a savanna context, thus became his hallmark [12,13] and he developed a successful model to explain the long-distance migration of wildebeest in Tanzania [14].

In his work he came to realise that the relation between grass growth and environmental factors [1], such as rainfall, are crucial to understand the trophic interaction between herbage and herbivore [6,15,16]. He thus set up a large scale WOTRO-funded project ("Fundamentals of African Rangelands Economies, FLARE") in which he guided a series of studies to investigate the relation between run-on, run-off and herbage production. The research of FLARE was focused on the mechanisms causing the change of grassy vegetation into bare soil or into woody vegetation, in both cases leading to a decline of revenues in pastoral economies [17,18]. The FLARE-team discovered that loss of water and nutrients by erosion caused by overgrazing at one place might lead to concentration of these resources at other places [18,19]. It was surprising to see that there are conditions of rainfall where the vegetation can still exist when organised in patches, where no vegetation is predicted when the spatial redistribution of resources is not considered [19,20,21]. This effect, however, strongly depends on soil type and the scale of livestock movement in these systems [22]. Further, they studied the effects of grazing and fire on the tree and grass cover in savannas [23]. They came up with a model that shows that grazing and fire are the main mechanisms causing a sudden increase in woody cover.

Prins then decided to refocus his work on herbivore assemblage structure [3,24,25] into work with a more fundamental approach, concentrating on the relationship between herbage mass and food intake. This led to a paper explaining the co-existence rules of the ninety-odd large grazing herbivores in Africa [26], which than was extrapolated to a world-wide prediction on grazer hotspots on all continents [27].

Prins ensures that his work is closely linked to societal issues as nature conservation, poverty alleviation and sustainable use of resources [28]. He was the lead author of the so-named "Principles of the Ecosystem Approach" [29], which was adopted by all 170-odd nations of the Convention on Biological Diversity, and presently he is preparing for the same Convention principles and criteria for the sustainable use of the components of biological diversity.

For the research themes that he is guiding, see Research line and history.
