Future IPM 3.0 best poster award for Naznin Nahar
During the recent conference “Future IPM 3.0 towards a sustainable agriculture” held from 15 to 20 October 2017 in Riva del Garda, Italy, CSA's PhD candidate Naznin Nahar was awarded the best poster award.
The Future IPM 3.0 conference was about sustainable production in agriculture with a special focus on plant protection to share scientific, technological and regulatory information to build the future strategies. The main focus of the conference was:
- Induced resistance in plants and multitrophic interactions in soil: the contribution of science to an effective field application
- Preserving soil quality and health for the future generations
- Novel tools and new challenges for IPM in viticulture
The conference was sponsored by the OECD Co-operative Research Programme on Biological Resource Management and was organized within the frame of the International Organization for Biological and Integrated Control (IOBC/WPRS).
The poster of Naznin Nahar was about biological eggplant nursery management carries over to reduced wilt and fruit rot in subsequent plantings. In a participatory study with eggplant farmers of the Jamalpur district, Bangladesh, we found that nursery inoculation with Trichoderma harzianum combined with seed treatments with hot water reduced damping-off losses and improved seedling quality compared to farmers’ conventional practice. On transplantation, those improved seedlings showed less wilt and fruit rot and improved yield of eggplant. Field application of T. harzianum alone or in combination with nursery also reduced wilt and fruit rot. T. harzianum provided feasible low cost disease control.
