PhD-programs

Wageningen University is famous for innovative and often path-breaking research in the field of life sciences and natural resources. It offers excellent facilities for conducting PhD research, also on topics related to policy and governance.

Wageningen University recognizes different categories of PhD candidates. The category that best fits your situation depends on the way the PhD program will be funded and whether or not you will conduct your research as an employee of Wageningen University (WU):

  • Junior researcher - PhD candidates who are temporary employees of Wageningen University, usually for a period of four years
  • Sandwich PhD student - foreign PhD candidates who are not employed by Wageningen University but have a grant and only spend the initial and last 6-8 months of the 4-year PhD Programme in Wageningen
  • Staff - PhD candidates who are already employees of Wageningen University and are given the opportunity to conduct PhD research
  • Guest PhD student - PhD candidates who perform their research at Wageningen University but are not employed by Wageningen University
  • External PhD student PhD candidates who are not employed by Wageningen University and conduct (or have conducted) their research at an institute other than Wageningen University.

Admission requirements vary depending on the PhD category. Junior Researchers are appointed via a job application (vacancy announcements). Sandwich PhD students, Guest PhD students and External PhD students must meet three general requirements for being admitted to the WU PhD program, i.e. (1) that a student has the proper qualification for a PhD study in the form of a MSc degree recognized by Wageningen University, (2) that a WU professor is willing to act as a promotor to the study, and (3) that funding for the PhD study is available. The funding should include the PhD fees charged by the university, your salary costs and other expenses associated with your stay in Wageningen, and any expenses related to the project itself.

In case you want to follow the sandwich PhD programme, you will need to indicate where you intend to obtain funds for a sandwich fellowship including PhD fees and costs for 12-15 months stay at Wageningen University. The university only offers a very limited number of sandwich fellowships. For further information on alternative funding options see the general WU Internet page on PhD study or visit the Nuffic webpage.
