Climate change and adaptive land and water management (CALM)

The overarching topic is long-term scenarios and impact studies, with special focus on climate change and climate variability.

This research team of Wageningen Environmental Research (Alterra) characterises droughts, floods, fresh water ecosystems, and heat waves including feedback mechanisms between land and atmosphere and the related impacts. The team is studying the sustainable use of land and water resources, strategies for adaptive river basin development, land use planning and making cities resilient, together with stakeholders. In addition to climate adaptation research and climate services, this research team studies climate change mitigation by developing tools to evaluate greenhouse gas emissions.

The team contributes to improving quality of life, increasing food security (Climate Smart Agriculture), and enabling green adaptation in all parts of the World (India, Bangladesh, Algeria, Southern Africa, Brasil, USA, etc). CALM works together with external and internal groups, such as the Water Systems and Global Change Group chair group of Wageningen University & Research.
