Support for theses and essays

The Library offers tips, lunch workshops and individual advice on searching and referencing information sources.

The Library works with the Wageningen Writing Lab to assist students in both finding and managing information for their theses or essays. This support does not replace regular teaching in information literacy but supplements it.

Online tutorials and tips

The For students pages at the Library website help students to find online content on various topics. The e-learning tutorials from the Library are a good tool to interactively learn the basics of information literacy. For an overview of search strategies students may consult the Searching for literature page. The For student pages also offer instruction manuals and tips for working with EndNote or Mendeley.

Workshops and demos

Students can attend demos and courses on EndNote and Mendeley and the following lunch workshops:

1. Search efficiently in the right database.
Students learn about the Library's databases and search strategies as well as tips and tricks to search correctly and efficiently. Students are encouraged to bring their own research question to work on.

2. Citing and referencing.
This workshop focusses on how to cite and reference correctly without committing plagiarism. It addresses questions like “what sources to cite”, “where to put an in-text citation” and “how to make a reference list”. The citation management tool EndNote is also briefly demonstrated.

Wageningen Writing Lab organizes workshops on important aspects of writing like planning a writing assignment, revising your text and writing styles. The dates of the workshops are posted on the websites of the Library and WWL. These dates can also be found on social media as intranet, Facebook, Twitter and Resource.

Appointment with an information specialist

If students have questions on topics like what search strategy to use or how to use EndNote/Mendeley, they can contact an information specialist by filling in this form. Depending on the question, the information specialist will answer by mail or make an appointment with the student.

Wageningen Writing Lab

Wageningen students can get personal help in academic writing at the Wageningen Writing Lab. The Writing Lab is located in the Forum Library. Students are coached in one-to-one sessions with a trained tutor. The sessions are intended to help students to recognise and to understand their strengths and weaknesses in writing texts as well as to teach them to evaluate and to improve their texts and writing process. The service is free for students. Students may use the Writing Lab as often as they need.
