The following are real-world examples in which the “Planning for nature” approach was applied.
1. Ecological networks
Cheshire County Council in the United Kingdom asked us to design a feasible future scenario. As the important landowners in this county are farmers, it was important to take their opinions into account and to show them the future scenarios. We were also asked to think about future trends in mining, urbanisation and road construction.
The Gelderse Vallei – East Utrecht reconstruction plan included the creation of new nature areas and the application of measures to improve the environment. We were asked to say which parts of the area offered the greatest opportunities for the sustainable development of new nature areas, taking as a starting point the existing wildlife and nature and making maximum use of the area’s opportunities and potential, but bearing in mind the impacts of ammonia emission and surface water pollution.
2. Green/blue veining
On Hoeksche Waard (an island in Zuid-Holland) all are agreed that sustainable agriculture should be maintained and developed in the region. One important aim is to achieve natural pest control in arable farming. We were asked to work with farmers and other landscape managers in order to design the desired situation, making use of the existing green/blue landscape elements. The preconditions were the spatial distribution and desired management of the green/blue veining, the creation of public support, the preservation of the region’s identity, and the application of the most recent scientific findings.
3. Robust Corridors
As a result of the building schemes in and around the North–South Zone of the Groene Mal (“green template”) of the Dutch city of Tilburg, questions have been raised about whether such schemes are compatible with the zone’s planned nature conservation function. The Green Template partners (the municipality and local nature conservation and wildlife organisations) asked us to analyse the usefulness of and need for this ecological link, and to collaborate with the city’s urban planners to formulate development alternatives that take account of the existing and planned construction schemes in this urban area.
