Project

Stunning of captured fish

Given the increasing concern about sustainability of fisheries , there is a need for the fishing industry to become more sustainable regarding technologies that are used on-board to process captured fish. Animal welfare is one of the themes of sustainability, and discomfort during processing on-board can be reduced by stunning fish prior to killing them.

Within the framework of this project we will establish technical specifications for electrical stunning of captured demersal finfish species and for killing the fish on-board. It is known that the available space for processing the captured fish on-board may differ substantially amongst fishing vessels. Hence, the established specifications will focus on a modular approach for electrical stunning, followed by killing. Within the framework of this project no equipment suitable for use in a commercial setting will be constructed or purchased. For construction or purchase of equipment a follow-up trajectory is needed.
