Africa

Protected horticulture in Africa is concentrated in Northern Africa (e.g., Morocco, Algeria, Egypt), Eastern Africa (Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda), South Africa, and Western Africa (Ghana). The greenhouse sector in Northern Africa mainly produces (fruit) vegetables for the European market. Export flowers form the majority of greenhouse production in Eastern Africa.

Greenhouses in South Africa produce both flowers and (fruit) vegetables, and greenhouses in Ghana mainly produce tomatoes and some other vegetables for the local market. Africa is a very large continent has a wide diversity of climates which requires different approaches throughout the continent.

The business unit Greenhouse Horticulture is involved in many initiatives through capacity building, research and advise on the development of greenhouses, cultivation systems, sustainable cultivation methods and quality control and certification.
