The business unit Greenhouse Horticulture develops new business models based on effective production of high value phytochemicals in The Greenhouse Pharmacy. Production of natural pharmaceuticals is the top of the ‘green value pyramid’ of the biobased economy. This top is our long term perspective, but value can also be created with natural colours, flavours and fragrances.
Opportunities in horticulture
Applying specific growing conditions offers new opportunities in horticulture. This starts with the search for the right genotypes. Subsequently, concentrations of target compounds may be increased through a combination of the right growing conditions.
In constructing new chains, new partners start exploring new ways of cooperation. In our research facilities we are already experimenting with different crops. We can double bioactive compounds such as vitamin C in tomato by LED lighting of the fruit. High-tech cultivation techniques offer unique opportunities. Combined with the craftsmanship of the horticultural sector and the evidence-based approach from Wageningen University & Research on breeding, cultivation and chains allows for the development of new business models in horticulture. Connecting knowledge from the horticultural sector with new partners from industry is crucial in to develop successful new business models.
