Zika

Scientists from Wageningen University & Research develop strategies to fight Zika through research on its disseminators: Aedes mosquitoes. In this dossier you will find background information and results of this research.

Zika in The Netherlands

The Zika virus is transmitted by mosquitoes to infect humans. Since 2015 a Zika epidemic of unprecedented scale is ongoing in Middle and South America and the Caribbean. Zika infection usually causes mild disease, but unborn children can develop severe brain damage when mothers become infected during pregnancy. Virologists and entomologists of Wageningen University & Research work together in the ZikaRisk project to study the potential of Dutch mosquito species to transmit Zika virus. The results are important to determine the risk for Zika outbreaks in the Netherlands.
