The end users of food, the consumers, waste the most food. 50% of food waste is down to consumers. One of the causes of food waste is simply buying or cooking too much. Every year, we throw away 50 kg of good food per person. This does not include vegetable peelings or apple cores – just perfectly good food.

Wageningen UR is monitoring food waste and trying to raise awareness among consumers, sometimes assisted by other organisations. Examples of campaigns include the Food Battle and Damn Food Waste. The Netherlands Nutrition Centre also gives practical tips to help reduce food waste. A 20-25% reduction in waste should be feasible.
